Final Thoughts

Memphis is a city that sits in the southwest corner of Tennessee and is the county seat of Shelby County. Memphis rises above the Mississippi River on the Chickasaw Bluff which is just south of the mouth of the Wolf River. The estimated population of Memphis is over 670, 000 which makes it the largest city in the state of Tennessee. It is also the second largest city in the entire southeastern region of the United States only behind Jacksonville, Florida. Memphis is the youngest of the four major cities in Tennessee which include Knoxville, Chattanooga and Nashville. It seems hard to believe that it is the youngest of these four cities because music from Memphis has been around for so long.

Music from Memphis first began in the early 1920s with the introduction of the blues sound. Some of the most popular musicians credited for the beginning of Memphis blues are Frank Stokes, Sleepy John Estes, Furry Lewis, and Memphis Minnie. The music from Memphis in the blues era was largely based around simple guitar sounds and jug bands. Jug bands were exactly what they sound like, a jug that is made into an instrument which when blown upon the opening, emits a lovely and musical sound. The pitches can be altered by increasing or decreasing the space between the mouth and the opening of the jug. Jugs that are made into musical instruments are typically made of glass or stoneware.

Some other unusual instruments that were used to produce music from Memphis during the blues era are harmonicas, violins, mandolins, banjos and kazoos.

In addition to the blues music from Memphis, there was also a large genre of music known as soul that originated from the area. Memphis soul music is a subset of the genre of soul music. Soul music emerged in the late 1950s in African American neighborhoods in Chicago, Memphis, Detroit and Philadelphia. It began when artists like Sam Cooke and Ray Charles started to merge traditional gospel with R&B music. Soul music revolved around two record labels; Stax Records and Hi Records. Stax Records produced all the songs from songwriters and musicians in the entire Memphis area. Hi Records used a nearby studio to record their songs and with Stax, brought soul music to a national level. Music from Memphis has had a large influence on the way we look at and feel about music today and without it, it is safe to assume that the sounds of music today would be completely different.

When the first introduction of the “Rap” style hit the music industry, few would have predicted that the impact of “Hip-Hop” culture would go mainstream. But it definitely has done exactly that, as seen by the increasing number of celebrities showing off their “Bling-Bling”, the standard term for hip hop jewelry. The upsurge in popularity of this particular style of jewelry, owes its claim to fame to the recording artists whose reputation was built on sporting expensive, flashy rings, pendants and earrings. In fact, this term has become so widely used, that the Oxford Dictionary has included it, along with “jiggy” and “phat”. Credits for this term go the Hip-Hop artist B.G, who recorded a 1999 hit song that brought “Bling-Bling” as a popular catchphrase into the mainstream.

There is no doubt about the broad appeal of the hip-hop jewelry style, it plays well on our human desire to be seen and by extension, when you have “bling-bling” it also refers to obvious and appealing wealth. While hip-hop fashion, the distinctive style of dress originating from urban culture, is only one element of this lifestyle, the attention given to the jewelry of this movement has far outpaced that of the clothes.

But truth be told, the wearing of large, extravagant jewelry was popular with artists like Elvis Presley and Tom Jones, a long time before hip-hop became the current cultural phenomenon, but it has completely altered the jewelry market of today. Because fans want to emulate their favorite celebrities and jewelry has always been at the top of the list when it comes to making a big impression. In today’s age of instant information, the hip-hop jewelry scene changes as fast as the record chart hits and the reputation of many celebrities can be boosted or deflated by who is wearing the most fashionable “Bling-Bling”.

There is an abundance of designs to choose from when it comes to hip-hop jewelry, all made with one point in mind; to catch the eye and attract attention. “Bling-Bling” can be seen on celebrities when they appear in music videos, on the catwalk or on the red carpet. From the late-1990s, hip-hop artists began wearing platinum jewelry, adding more than a little flash to their marketing material. After platinum replaced gold as the most popular precious metal in hip-hop fashion, fans and artists began to compete to see who could wear the most outrageous “bling-bling” of platinum often with a dazzling display of diamonds. Hip-Hop performers began to take their bragging rights directly from who was wearing the most platinum jewelry.

Now with an ever growing community on the internet, the mainstream acceptance of hip-hop jewelry is confirmed. There are hip-hop jewelry web sites offering completely ‘iced-out’ bling-bling; rings, bracelets or watches, encrusted to the hilt with real or faux diamonds. And the latest money daze of hip-hop jewelry is the so-called ‘spinner’ watches and rings. The influence of hip-hop has even extended to the world of dentistry; platinum fronts are in demand, some going as far as to replace their own teeth with an entire mouthful of permanent platinum teeth. Others who have opted for a little more modest display have their dentists create platinum grills-removable metal jeweled teeth coverings.

Growing up in the City of Detroit during the early sixties was a memorable era for music. It was a period of time whereby the unique sounding records of Motown were being played and heard throughout the streets, nightclubs, house parties and radio stations everywhere. It was common to have the soulful R and B records playing on the jukeboxes while folks were dancing in the streets or singing in the barber shops and beauty parlors to the love songs that eventually captivated the hearts of millions of people throughout the world. Music cds and rap music were not heard of during that period, it was all about the vinyl records and rhythm and blues soul.

The songs that were written by Motown songwriters during the 60′s & 70′s had so much meaning. They were songs that spoke about true love, current events and the heartache and pains of life experiences. Oh yes, Motown had it going on! Their music became universal music. Many of the soulful tunes crossed over into other markets such as pop, jazz, blues, etc… But just like George Benson said in one of his recordings “Everything Must Change”, and sure enough, he was right about the music.

After giving so many years service and great music to the City of Detroit, Motown moved out and Rap/Hip Hop moved in. Instead of hearing someone singing My Baby Loves Me or My Girl, you began to hear new sounding lyrics of street experience expressed in rhythms with the mouth, chest, hands and feet as such had never been heard before.

This new sound called Rap evolved in the early 80′s and took off as a sky rocket in the late 90′s and New Millennium as Hip Hop/Rap. Even today Rap/Hip Hop music is still a multi billion dollar genre. Millions of cds, videos and dvd’s are sold each year in the Hip Hop genre of music. And there is no sign that Hip Hop will be slowing down or taking a back seat to anyone anytime soon.

So what happened to the Motown sound…. did it die out? No! The Motown sound will never die out. It will always play a significant part in the hearts of millions who embraced it’s sound back in the early 60′s, and continued to pass that sound on to their children throughout the 70′s, 80′s and 90′s.

Sometimes you just have to move over and let the new kids on the block have a turn in expressing their musical talents, songs and ideas. That’s what Motown did…moved over-not out. And now the Hip Hop artists are not the new kids on the block anymore, for they have taken their position to express themselves musically, just like the rhythm and blues artists took their position to express themselves in the Motown era.

That’s how we’ve gone from Motown to Hip Hop!

Sincerely,

Michael Bell

We all remember the wildly popular music videos from the early 1990′s for the trio of Aerosmith power ballads – “Crazy”, “Cryin’”, and “Amazing” – that put Alicia Silverstone and Liv Tyler, daughter of lead singer Steven Tyler, on the map.  Sure, featuring your daughter in that state of undress might not seem conventional, but nothing about Aerosmith’s career could be considered conventional.

The Bad Boys from Boston have have booked two shows in Los Angeles this summer along with ZZ Top, their pals from Texas with the beards (except of course, Frank Beard, the only one without a beard).  Aerosmith at the Staples Center in Los Angeles has sold out for Friday, August 21 before they head down to Orange County to play the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in Irvine on Sunday, August 23.  While demand for Aerosmith tickets are high, our friends at Golden Circle Tickets assure us that they can still provide you with the best seats in the house.

It has taken a long time for Aerosmith to reach this level of notoriety.  The band members originally met in the late ’60s, where they lived together in an apartment on Commonwealth Avenue.  Long before “Dream On” became a radio staple, the band would spend their afternoons watching “The Three Stooges” stoned.  Soon enough, the band refined their blues-rock sound and found fame locally.  It was then that they were signed to their first record deal and their self-titled debut album marked the beginning of this enduring American band.

Not ones to ever be pigeon-holed into one style of music, Aerosmith freely moved from blues and rock ‘n roll to morphing rap music with hard rock for the first time.  Their collaboration with Run DMC on “Walk This Way” in 1986  broke barriers in the music industry and brought Aerosmith to an all-new level of popularity.  The MTV music video staple introduced the band to a brand new audience: some black, some white, but all young.

Drugs fueled the band from its inception through its peak until it destroyed the band.  Dissension among band members led to fights.  Drugs led to sloppy performances and Steven Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry were known to pass out on stage at times.  The band broke up until all members agreed to find sobriety through drug rehab.  Fortunately for us, they were able to clean up and launch the third act of their now-storied career.

Although the band’s albums have been some of the highest selling of all-time, they only experienced a #1 single one time with the release of “I Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing”, which was featured in the 1998 blockbuster, “Armageddon”.  Coincidentally, their only number one single was written by Diane Warren, not Aerosmith.

Cut to today.  Just when you thought Aerosmith could not branch out any further, they teamed up with Guitar Hero to bring their music to a new generation of kids through video games.  The latest Aerosmith tour, co-headlined by ZZ Top, is sponsored by Guitar Hero and you are guaranteed to see a wide cross-section of fans.  Be the coolest parents on your block and bring your kids.  They will be blown away that you have even heard of this band.  Little do they know that you have been following the band for thirty years!

Aerosmith will be joined by ZZ Top as they play the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Friday, August 21 and then in Irvine at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre on Sunday, August 23.  Only Golden Circle Tickets can get you the best seats – the ones unavailable everywhere else!

Hip hop was brought to live in the late 1960s and early 1970s and had an amazing development since the first day it had been first introduced.

This subculture has several main elements and this is one of the major reasons why hip hop gained the success that it has now. Besides the specific, new type of music that it brought: rapping, hip hop also introduced a new fashion trend: hip hop clothing, a new form of art, graffiti, another way of dancing, break dancing and last but not least beat boxing. With so many elements introduced there is no wonder that hip hop graduately started to develop and win the hearts of many people.

Besides rap music, which is the main element that hip hop is known for and appreciated, another important aspect of this subculture that had immediate appealing to fans as well as ordinary people, was hip hop clothing. Today there is not a clothing store that either sells hip hop clothing or has clothes that are also inspired from this type of fashion. All the major designer labels borrowed something from this amazing form of art known as hip hop.

One of the major reasons why nowadays there are thousands of clothing stores that promote and sell hip hop clothing is the fact that this simple fashion was and still is accessible and easy to wear. Large, baggy pants and long t-shirts are the two major iconic aspects of hip hop clothing. Moreover, this new trend allowed people to look a little uncouth as long as they feel comfortable with what they wear. Another reason why hip hop clothes must be very comfortable is because you have to be allowed to move freely in order to be able to break- dance.

In the beginning the hip hop fashion was looked at as being more appropriate for those who lived in the ghetto or had minimum wage. However, this was about to change very soon. What hip hop brought to the world was undeniable and there was no way that this was just some wave that was going to pass without leaving any trace. More than that, hip hop has not passed and it is maybe stronger today than it was when it first started. Hip hop clothes are a big hit, rapping is one of the most expressive ways of expressing yourself and break- dancing and graffiti have become an art form that you can not live without.

The numerous clothing stores that sell hip hop clothes and the number of brands that started to make such clothes increased considerably. This subculture is now appreciated at its value and although there are some bad things that hip hop promotes at times, the many great aspects of this subculture have brought it where it belongs.

Hip hop clothes are found in thousands of clothing stores, break- dance is thought in thousands of dancing schools, graffiti is found on millions of wall and hip hop music is listened by millions of people around the world.

If you are a serious hip hop music fan and need to find a place where you can catch up on all the latest hip hop action, then you want to check World Star Hip Hop. This website is designed with hip hop fans in mind and provides them music videos and entertainment that is geared toward the ‘urban community’. With news, videos, music and more, this is comprehensive website for all of your hip hop needs.

Videos seem to be a big attraction for people and World Star Hip Hop has plenty of them. They have a searchable database collection that you connect to when you join the site and as a member you will be able to learn about the videos and watch related video content as well. Just imagine how nice it would be to watch all of Jay-Z’s videos in one place without having to troll the Internet. You can search the database by video or artist and then watch the result. You can also chat with other users in the attached chat box and make new friends while you enjoy the latest in hip hop.

Currently World Star Hip Hop has over 508,000 fans with 78% of them being in the United States. It is considered a top 5,000 websites and while it is geared towards the urban community as a whole, its main demographic base is African American teen and young adult oriented, leaning slightly towards the ladies. People who enjoy Black Entertainment Television (BET) and shop at stores like Finish Line are most likely to be found frequenting a website such as this, based on the market research done prior to launching the website to the world.

Music videos aren’t the only thing showing up on World Star Hip Hop. All types of special interest videos are being mixed into the sites database. There are videos surrounding the current Presidential campaign – not surprising since Democratic candidate Barack Obama is African American – as well as entertainment and general interest videos. The database currently has over 40 pages of videos to look through, and that is before you even join the website to investigate the rest of the content available to members.

The site should definitely not be viewed by children under the age of 18 as there is some very adult content available on it just in the public areas. For example, if you click on the ‘WSHH Honey’s’ link at the top of the home page, you are taken to a web page that displays ladies in all states of undress including their videos showing why they should be considered a ‘WSHH Honey’. There are even instructions on the World Star Hip Hop site on how to submit your own video.

What is interesting to note is that while World Star Hip Hop is a membership site, it doesn’t seem to be any links on how to join. When you run your mouse over the website and text that talks about membership, it does not give you an option to click and join.

Congress wants to talk about Hip-Hop; well so do I…

“I said a hip hop, Hippie to the hippie, The hip, hip a hop, and you don’t stop, a rock it To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie, To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat.” Bar none, the most famous rap lyric of all time. From hip-hop heads to novices, the Sugar Hill Gang’s Rappers Delight still holds the crown as the most renowned rap song, unparalleled. Hip-hop started as a voice of the streets; a voice of frustration coming from the inner city. Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five’s The Message served as “news from the ghetto” to show America what was really going on in our neighborhoods. We then entered the world of Paul Revere and My Addidas. From the Beastie Boys to Run-DMC; hip-hop was beginning to make a world wide impact. With the early nineties came a new style of hip-hop; gangster rap. Bursting on the scene was a group of angry black males that were ready to voice their fury through music. NWA (N***** with attitudes) was able to showcase their rage and aggravation with a style not seen before. Spewing curse words with lyrics like F*** the police; NWA made such an impression on American society that former Vice President Dan Quayle attempted to have their records pulled from shelves and their concerts cancelled. As the nineties progressed; so did hip-hop. The genre of rap music and the culture of hip-hop became so massive that it eventually grew into a multi-billion dollar industry. But with all of its popularity hip-hop has never been able to shake negativity. Hip-hop has attempted to portray itself as an art form that is simply a voice of the African-American community. Unfortunately, America is not buying what they are selling. So how do we begin to convince America that what we have to say constitutes a valid argument? By changing our approach.

Kanye West’s latest release, Graduation, was skillfully crafted as an album full of anthems with a positive message. However, Kanye has always been portrayed as a positive hip-hop artist. He is the latest example of how rap music can make an impact without being viewed as desecrating to American society. As mentioned earlier; the song The Message was one of the first examples of how hip-hop can serve as a positive stimulate to enact social change within American society. Unfortunately, rappers can become victims of the violence that is depicted in their music. When Boogie Down Productions DJ Scott La Rock was gunned down because of gang violence; KRS-One helped to organize an all-star ensemble of rappers to construct the song Self Destruction. The set featured Public Enemy, MC Lyte, Just Ice, Stetasonic, KRS-One and Daddy-O. Self Destruction had the focus of helping to end gang violence. The song’s message was felt heavily throughout hip-hop. It was able to express a meaning of unity and optimism while depicting the negative images connected with inner city violence. This approach was one of success and one of warning. The song gave caution that if this type of behavior does not cease; our society is deemed for failure. It was also able to show that the hip-hop culture is able to come together for the common good of a just cause.

Rappers in today’s hip-hop culture are controlled by capital. We cannot blame all rappers for their lyrical content as most are under contractual obligations through their record companies. Some rappers are bound by their agreements to release 2 – 3 songs extolling their love for jewelry and admiration for women. If Congress wants to truly have a discussion on the issue of lyrics within hip-hop; it is only fair to invite the record companies to the conversation as well. Major music labels such as Interscope and Universal records make billions of dollars off these types of records. One of the most popular rap records of all time entitled Bling Bling was created strictly to flaunt rappers love of jewelry. Some rappers spend upwards of $500,000 on rings, watches, necklaces and diamonds in their teeth. This type of music does not resonate well with most parents as it sends the wrong message to kids. Instead of placing a value on matters that will instill a sense of self worth in children; the music is only meant to attract children and teenagers to purchase the record

Rappers also have to take on a more responsible role in this battle. Those that have achieved a status of affluence through rap music have a responsibility to give back to the culture they took so much away from. Starting a foundation or chartable organization is not enough to satisfy the appetite for change within the hip-hop community. Rappers with riches must help promote artist that want to change the status quo and challenge record labels that continue to release negative music.

While my opinion is strictly that of a person on the outside looking into a very complex situation; it’s important that we question what we deem as un-fit or un-worthy. While I am a hip-hop head to the fullest degree; I do not like the direction in which my culture is headed. That culture being of course…..is hip-hop.
